If you’re craving excitement, parasailing off Captiva Island offers unmatched views of the SanCap area. This excursion is a must-do activity when on Captiva Island.
Parasailing Over The Gulf of Mexico
In 2018, we did a much-anticipated parasailing excursion. We chose YOLO Watersports in the heart of the village as we were staying only a couple of blocks away.
The adventure begins with a wet walk in the gulf to the boat (in chest deep waters), where you get instructions and a safety talk. Cruising out into the Gulf of Mexico is as relaxing as it sounds. Within minutes, you’re hooked up and the parasail does its magic, slowly releasing you into the sky.
We were awestruck by the view even before reaching maximum altitude, around 300 feet above the gulf. Captiva Island is beautiful on the ground but seeing it from the air is breathtaking. Several hundred feet up you get a bird’s eye view of Cayo Costa, North Captiva, Sanibel, Pine Island Sound, and all of Captiva Island. Directly below are endless, azur-colored waters.
Gliding through the air with the wind in our hair, it felt as though the islands belonged to us. The beauty of the area shines from the sky. The sheer size of the gulf is mind-blowing as you drift above the water.
It was a lot like seeing it from an airplane, only much closer up.
We stayed in the air for about 15 minutes, sailing back and forth along Captiva until being gently reeled back to the boat.
Our only regret was not getting the photo package so we could visually share our experience.
Captiva Parasailing Options
Despite being a small island, there are three options for parasailing on Captiva Island: Sunny Island Adventures, YOLO and Captiva Watersports. Each offers opportunities for one- to three-person experiences.
For those staying at the southern end of the island, Captiva Watersports parasailing leaves from ‘Tween Waters marina.
If you’re staying at South Seas Island Resort, Sunny Island Adventures parasailing takes off from the South Seas Marina. Their office is located at the South Seas Island Resort entrance, next to Chadwick Square.
YOLO Watersports equipment is on the beach at the end of Andy Rosse Lane, near the Mucky Duck. YOLO is the only outfitter that requires you to get in the water and walk to the boat.
You may be able to bring a friend along to watch; just be sure to check with the staff first. Parasailing weight and height requirements can vary from outfitter to outfitter. All three outfitters offer parking for those not staying on the island.
Planning Your Captiva Parasailing Excursion
While any outdoor activity can be interrupted by the weather, parasailing requires perfect conditions for a safe experience. Don’t be surprised if choppy waters or high winds derail your parasailing plans.
Start to monitor the Captiva forecast for your trip dates ahead of time, to help you pick the best weather option. Make sure to call in the morning and confirm parasailing is available that day. Don’t wait until your last day to parasail; Mother nature may not cooperate.
We can’t say enough about this experience. Even for those timid with heights, it’s a thrilling, scenic adventure.
