Where is Captiva Island?
Captiva Island is located on Florida’s Gulf Coast near Fort Myers. Sanibel Island lies between Fort Myers and Captiva Island.
Which airport is closet to Captiva Island and Sanibel Island?
Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers is less than 40 miles from Captiva and Sanibel Islands. Rental cars and car services are available at the airport. The drive from Southwest Florida International Airport to Sanibel Island is around thirty minutes. It takes another thirty minutes to get through Sanibel and onto Captiva.
How do I get to Captiva Island?
Although it is an island, Captiva is accessible by car via the Sanibel Causeway which spans San Carlos Bay. Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers is the nearest airport to the island. From Fort Myers, you can reach the island by taking McGregor Blvd to the Causeway, then head north on Periwinkle Way on Sanibel Island until to you cross the bridge onto Captiva Island. Where can I stay on Captiva Island?
With several resorts and hundreds of vacation rentals (in all shapes and sizes), Captiva Island has something for everyone. South Seas Island Resort is the most well known (and largest) but is one of several options. Vacation homes work great for larger groups and families who need a bit more space.
What is there to do on Captiva Island?
Swimming, sunbathing and shelling are just a few of the ways we like to relax on Captiva Island. Excursions to neighboring islands, fishing guides and dolphin cruises are all available from the island marinas. No matter how you fill the day, the best way to cap it off is to enjoy sunset on the beach. Nearby Sanibel Island offers expanded shopping and dining options.
What is the vibe of Captiva Island?
Captiva Island has a very relaxed feel. You’ll be hard pressed to find anyone rushing around town. It’s a great place for snowbirds, families and anyone looking to unplug. This is not a college Spring Break vacation spot. Although there is not a vibrant night life, several establishments offer free evening outdoor entertainment for those who aren’t quite ready to call it quits after dinner.
How do I get around Captiva Island?
Walking is far and away the number one form of transportation on Captiva Island. There’s light vehicle traffic on the island and golf carts available to rent, which are street legal on the northern 2/3 portion of the island. Bikes and wagons are available to rent as well. South Seas Island Resort operates a free in-resort trolley system for its guests. Captiva Island Inn operates a shuttle, the S-Car-Go, to take guests from the South Seas main gate to Andy Rosse Lane where its restaurants are located. How is the shelling on Captiva Island and Sanibel Island?

When is the best time to visit Captiva Island or Sanibel Island?
Anytime is a great time to visit Captiva Island, especially for those in need of some R&R. Peak season runs from December to April. Mid-February through April (Spring Break) is the height of peak season. Some establishments may offer reduced rates for off-peak times.
Can I see dolphins on Captiva Island?
Yes! Dolphin sightings are extremely common on both Captiva Island and Sanibel Island. While not 100% guaranteed, you can often see dolphins swimming off the coast of the islands. Mornings and sunsets seem to be best for dolphin sightings from the beach. Captiva Cruises operates a dolphin cruise specifically geared toward dolphin sightings. We’ve also seen dolphins swimming off our boat during a cruise to Cayo Costa Island.
