RSW Ground Transportation Options

We’ve found that for shorter trips, four days-three nights, it is more affordable to rent a car than to take the other options. We’ve never stayed more than eight days and even then, found the convenience and cost of a rental car to be the best option.

If you don’t take a rental car, we recommend using one of these Sanibel Captiva online grocery delivery options.

RSW Rental Cars

Convenience-wise, a rental car gives you the most freedom. Getting to Captiva Island via rental car is our preferred option. If you want to head to Sanibel to explore, go shopping or go biking, you’ll want to rent a car. The ability to come and go as you please is always a plus.

If renting a car at RSW is on your travel itinerary, then you’re in luck. There are 10 rental companies onsite at RSW and the rental offices are located across the street from baggage claim. The convenience of renting a car at RSW is hard to beat.

Rental agencies onsite at RSW include:

  • Alamo
  • Avis
  • Budget
  • Dollar
  • Enterprise
  • Hertz
  • National
  • Payless Car Rental
  • Sixt
  • Thrifty

Insider Tip: Beating the car rental lines at RSW

RSW Prearranged Car Services

If you don’t need a car at your end destination, then this is a great option. Having pre-arranged pickup spares you from the lines of the car rental desks and waiting your turn for a Lyft or Uber.

Car services with service to Sanibel and Captiva Islands include.

At RSW, your driver will meet you at the baggage claim carousel for your flight and bring you to your car.

RSW Uber-Lyft

Uber and Lyft will get you to Sanibel and Captiva for about the same price, although Uber starts at about $10 less for Sanibel Island.

  • Uber: According to the ride estimator, an Uber ride to Sanibel starts at about $48 or $60 to get to South Seas Island Resort on Captiva.
  • Lyft: Lify’s price estimator says trips to both Sanibel as well as Captiva start at $60 for one way.

These quotes do not include tips and it’s unclear if the Sanibel Causeway Toll fee is included. Round trip, you’ll easily spend double.

While Uber and Lyft are available, some travelers have told us that finding transportation to and from the islands difficult. Drivers, they say, would prefer to not to cross the Sanibel Causeway.

Unfortunately, the RSW website’s mentions of Uber and Lyft only relate to their management agreement with RSW. This needlessly makes finding your car service a bit more difficult. If you are using one of these services, you want to head to the transportation information desk near baggage claim (lower level) and ask for instruction. Otherwise, follow “Ground Transportation” signs and look for “rideshare” or “Transportation Network Companies (TNC)”
