It’s March; the snow is melting, temperatures are rising, and most importantly: it’s spring training time! It’s hard to think of a better way to spend the first days of spring than watching your favorite baseball teams practice, up close and personal. Except if your trip includes a Spring Training beach day. One of the best places to do just that, is Ft. Myers, Florida.
Ft. Myers is home to two Grapefruit League teams for spring training; the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox. Winter weary travelers flock to the sunshine state as spring training aligns with spring break.
When your team isn’t on the field, there’s plenty of time to explore the area. Looking for a day trip? Our choice: Captiva Island!
Whether you’re taking a day off from hanging out by Florida’s version of the big green monster at JetBlue Park, or the Churchill Downs-inspired Hammond Stadium, a trip to Sanibel or Captiva will help you make the most of your spring getaway.
Spring Training Beach Day Trips: Visit the Beach
Not only are both of these parks within minutes of the Ft. Myers Airport (RSW), they’re also a short drive to Sanibel and Captiva Islands.
No matter what’s on your agenda, be sure to stay until sunset.
Day Trip Option 1: Explore the Islands by Bike
Both Sanibel and Captiva Islands have single-lane roads in each direction, so traffic can back up during March’s peak vacation season. If you’re pressed for time, we recommend renting bikes from Billy’s Rentals. You can bike either or both islands. It’s a great way to explore this charming area. Biking from Sanibel to Captiva is a great way to see both islands if you have the time.
Restaurants are located all across the islands, giving you plenty of options when you need a break. The Lighthouse Cafe is our go-to stop for lunch when biking on Sanibel (you can’t go wrong with the Grouper and Blackened Chicken Sandwiches!). Remember, although there are many restaurants on Captiva Island, several are open only to guests of South Seas Island Resort.
Day Trip Option 2: Beach Bum
If you’re looking to relax or want to work on your tan, there’s no better choice than to pack your swimsuit and head to the beach.
If you’re Sanibel-bound, you’ll find parking available near beaches across the island. Those heading to Captiva will want to head straight to Alison Hagerup Beach near the main gate to South Seas Island Resort.
Whichever island you’re on, a picnic lunch on the beach is never a bad idea. Head over to one of the markets on the island and enjoy.
Both Sanibel and Captiva Islands are recognized for having some of the best shelling in America. If you’re traveling with kids, searching for seashells and building sandcastles will keep them busy for hours.
With a little luck and a keen eye, you may even see dolphins swim by.
Day Trip Idea 3: Water-Based Excursions
If you want to get out on the water or explore the greater Gulf Coast area, you’ll want to make Captiva Island your destination.
Yolo Watersports offers a variety of water-based activities from its location just a few steps from Captiva’s beach. Paddleboards, wave runners, and 14 foot Hobie catamarans are available for those looking to be on the water on their own terms. For the more adventurous, parasailing and flyboarding are also available.
Those looking for something a bit more laid back but still want to be on the water, consider a cruise along the Gulf Coast. Our favorite is the half-day cruise to Cayo Costa State Park via Captiva Cruises, which gives you a chance to visit this (nearly) deserted island. Don’t forget the Dolphin Cruise or trips to Cabbage Key and Useppa Island. You won’t regret any of these options!
