Cielo Sanibel Island: A Heavenly Dining Experience

For years, we drove down Periwinkle Way and longingly looked at the Cielo restaurant sign, wishing that someday we could dine at the beautiful eatery. Someday, finally arrived.

Dinner at Cielo on Sanibel Island was always on the wish list but we wanted to savor the meal on a kid-free night. And when we did, it was even more wonderful than I imagined.

There’s a reason the name means “heaven.” What a breath of fresh air. The gorgeous entrance with its beautiful mosaic tile immediately makes you feel welcome. Live piano music fills the room, transporting you to a fine dining experience.

I stepped inside and it was instant happiness. (And that’s before I saw the wine wall) Yes, an actual wall of wine! Hundreds of bottles are on display – floor to ceiling –  a sophisticated separation of the dining room from the bar.

The restaurant screams elegance in the warmest of ways, without being stuffy. We can’t recommend this restaurant enough. The vibrant colors and stylish decor make you want to stay all night.

Homemade Menu Items

Pappardelle
Apricot-Pistachio Chicken

I ordered the homemade pappardelle pasta with tomato sauce. It’s served with a generous helping of melted, fresh mozzarella cheese. The pasta was delicious and filling without being too rich. You’ll want to save some of your bread to scoop up all the extra sauce.

My husband chose the apricot-pistachio chicken, served with jasmine rice, carrots, broccoli and a Madeira wine sauce. This Mediterranean-inspired dish was light, yet filling and a change of pace from what you find elsewhere on the islands.

Come for the Food, Stay For The Cocktails

One for Mary Jo
Boulevardier

While the wall of wine may be inviting, the cocktails are where the action is.

Cielo features a variety of unique takes on classic drinks, including a duck fat Old Fashioned. If you’re a whiskey fan, you’re in luck. The whiskey list at Cielo is far more expansive than one would expect for Sanibel.

My husband, a Negroni fan, chose the Boulevardier, which uses whiskey in place of the standard gin. The highlight for him was selecting which whiskey. After some deliberation, he settled on an overproof rye, which stood out in this classic cocktail.

I had to try One for Mary Jo. I don’t know who Mary Jo is but I sure love her drink! It’s made with house-infused citron vodka, peach liqueur, white cranberry juice and fresh lemon. Light, refreshing and slightly citrusy, I’d definitely order it again.

Cielo Sanibel Island: Should You Go?

Cielo had some of the best service we’ve experienced on the islands. There are so many mouth-watering items on the menu, we can’t wait to go back. The only regret I have is not stopping by the bar for a cocktail, to enjoy our evening at Cielo even longer.

If you’re looking for a fantastic meal in a lovely setting, Cielo is a must. It hits the trifecta of refined ambiance, top-notch service and fabulous food. Treat yourself to an evening at Cielo, you deserve it.
