Walking across Captiva Island to take photos on a hot and humid day, we needed a break; time to refuel and get a cold drink, stat. The Green Flash drink, named after the restaurant, was calling our name.
I feel like describing the day as hot and humid doesn’t do it justice. It was 88 degrees with 90% humidity. The air was thick. Getting out of the air conditioned car, we were slammed into a wall of sweltering hot air.
We made our long overdue visit to The Green Flash, Captiva Island’s bayside eatery.
Reading the menu, I turned to the back page which explains the restaurant’s history. It lists a drink named after the establishment: The Green Flash drink.
I didn’t plan on getting a special drink that afternoon. But the sun was beating down on us and something cool and refreshing was exactly what I needed. The Green Flash drink seemed up to the challenge.
The Green Flash Drink
On the reverse of the menu, there’s a restaurant FAQ. One of those asks “What is the Green Flash drink?”
The answer is simply “A piña colada topped with melon liqueur (all together, now… “mmmmm”).”
I ordered one (you know, for research). It was even better than I expected.
Flavored Pina Coladas are nothing new. You can get these across Sanibel and Captiva. What was different was this swirl was not blended fruit (strawberry and mango, for example) but from Midori melon liqueur.
The Green Flash drink is a piña colada with an added brightness, both visually and in taste. The burst of melon flavor gives a fresh spin to an island staple. The base of the piña colada isn’t too dense, making it the perfect drink to sip by the bay on a scorching hot afternoon.
